Chatting to photographer and style blogger: Bubu

Posted on February 6th, 2013 by Bongiwe Tshiqi

Meet Lebogang ‘Bubu’ Tlhako. A 24 year old photography graduate and blogger from Katlehong in Jo’burg. She turns the lens of her camera on people who are eccentric and understated. She’s interested in how people put their clothes together and documents this on her blog: Roses and Poses.

We sat down with this cool chica, who was recently a finalist in the Elle Style Reporter search, to find out what makes her tick… 1. How did you fall in love with photography?

I was actually accompanying a friend to the Market Photo Workshop to enquirer about the photography course when I was really blown away by the work that was exhibited at that time.

2. Once you knew that photography was for you, how did you go about pursuing it?

I studied the foundation course which is the beginners course, Intermediate and the Advanced course.

3. Do you think you could have skipped the education and became a photographer with just your natural talent?

Not a chance. There’s so much I learnt while studying and I’m still discovering new things.

4. What skills have you obtained in your years as a photographer.

I’m an analogue lover and I’m so grateful that I got to learn how to use the analogue camera and the process of developing the film.

5. Who do you look up to within the industry?

Ross Garett, Steve Marais, Lebohang Khanye, Chris Blue, Sannah Kvist, Kris Lee Moolman, Richard Learoyd… the list is endless.

6. Where do you get your inspiration from?

When it comes to fashion, the older generation inspire me a lot. I love watching old films like Dirty Dancing and Pretty Woman. Also love golden oldies like S’gudi ‘Snaysi and Bophelo ke Semphego all of which have inspired a revival of fashions from the past generations.

7. Tell us about being a finalist in the Elle Style Reporter and what the experience was like?

It was an amazing challenging experience. We were constantly given challenges to do, got such an overwhelming response. It was a great platform to showcase my work.

What plans do you have in the pipeline?

Shoot shoot and shoot some more.

What advice would you give aspiring photographers?

If photography is really your passion.. research and shoot. Following your passion pays off in the end!

What do you do to unwind? (for fun)

While other people meditate and do other things, I play dress up on a daily. It keeps me sane. I love thrifting, I’m a sucker for hand-me-downs and I heart music.
