Why braces aren’t the end of the world

I’ll be the first to admit that braces are probably one of the worst rights of passage that one has to follow. Chances are that most of us have probably had braces or are in the process of getting them. Some people even have them twice. The truth is that braces really aren’t that bad or rather, as bad as American teenage movies make them out to be. You know that stereotype: the ‘uncool nerd’ has the braces and glasses. After all, who’s ever watched a movie and seen the popular girl with wire running round her teeth? But I don’t think braces are all that bad and I’m going to tell you why.Firstly, they’re doing you a favour. They’re literally fixing your teeth. They’re making them grow a certain way that is not only better for you health wise but also in terms of looks. Ever since I got braces, I notice the fault’s in people’s teeth and every time I do so, I am so glad that I have them and that my teeth won’t look as bad as theirs. Doesn’t it make more sense to have braces now than to avoid them and have oddly positioned teeth that don’t really look that great later?
Secondly, these days you can do so much with them that you can use them as a fashion accessory. There are so many different colours to choose from and you can mix and match them to make patterns. If you think about it ,it’s a really cool way to be creative and you can match it to jewellery or outfits or if you’re not as brave, you can simply go for clear bands around the wires that can hardly be seen.
Thirdly, a lot of people barely notice them. I have had braces for close to a year now and I still have people who I see everyday greet me with a , “What? When did you get braces?” I only noticed my friend’s braces after a year of her having them on and that was a complete accident. People have more important things to worry about than what’s around your teeth. I don’t even notice when people’s braces get taken off. That’s how insignificant they are.
So, if you’re lucky enough to not need braces, smile and if you have braces, smile because at the end of the day, people see the confidence behind the smile not the wire in front of it.
