Our Interns

Bianca

Interns1st March 2010 -

Hey guys!

I have been a semi-intern (doing work experience for a school project) for SWG! I got here at 10 a.m. (got to sleep in - yay) and met Mea, the editor of Saltwater GIRL. She introduced me to some of the other people who work here at SWG and Zig Zag and I thought it was so awesome to see how everyone was so chilled and seemed to have great laid-backed personalities.

I was given the assignment to find some local events around South Africa coming up this weekend and I was surprised to see how out-of-the-loop I was! There is some really cool stuff happening. I had to find some hotties on the net (more than pleased to do that) and search for a little background on them. Robert Buckley was my favourite hottie!

Tomorrow I'll help the others with their recycling project for the `green' issue. I think it's really important that we all start getting involved with the environment! I really hope that I could one of these days get in the room with one of the photographers and learn a thing or two from them. I would also be interested in learning how to create the fashion and article lay-outs.

So far fashion journalism and media looks really interesting and I can't wait to learn more!

2nd March, 2010 -

So today is my second day, and unfortunately it has to end short because I have to trot back down to school for an English olympiad and forum discussions (nerd, I know!).

I really love photography so I was pretty stoked when Jemma allowed a sneak preview of the photo shoot for the next issue! They were so beautiful; I just loved them! They really portrayed the theme and happy 'love my world' lifestyle well. I felt really privileged when she asked me to help with the fashion lay-outs and when she used my ideas! It was really awesome to get involved in something creative, especially considering that I'm a typical teen who loves fashion!

The people in this office are so down-to-earth which makes me feel a lot more comfortable and at ease. The 3 girls I am sharing an office with are really cool. Sam is the innocent one who seems like she couldn't hurt a fly! Fathima is really quiet but honest and sweet. She has hint of a dry sense of humour. Jemma is the fun fashioinista who is always laughing and interacting with everyone. I just loved it when she was watching a video on youtube of someone filming a tsunami (for educational purposes). She was laughing and screaming at him to run away faster. Mea, the editor, is so chilled and really nice! So much for a 'The Devil Wears Prada' scenario.

Can't wait to see what tomorrow will hold for me!

3rd March, 2010 -

Today I came early to the office and will be leaving later so that I could catch up on some time that I had missed out yesterday. I carried on looking for pics for Jemma for her presentation. I wrote an article for the website (How to Look After Your Surfboard'). I was happy to get some journalism experience under my belt because that is one of my career options.

I surfed the web for the latest celeb gossip to post on the site. That was an interesting task seeing that I never keep up with the Hollywood scandals so don't hunt me down if you find un-newsworthy!

When I was done with my few tasks I went to Mea to ask for something to do. She had me read some articles and do quiz's which would be featured in the future issue. I was shocked to see how much I don't do for the environment!

Saltwater GIRL mag is honestly a beacon for teen girls growing up and finding themselves as it is a mag that carries such less superficiality than other mags. It educates us on global and political issues and comes up with ways for us to do our part and how to make our days happier ones.
When I look around and see the barefoot co-workers lurking around, the fish tank in our office with a sign saying 'who's fed the fish' (which the diligent Sam beat me to), and the creative aspects in the work and everything around the rooms, I know that it's going to be hard to say good-bye!
